Virginia was the first state in the south to have a strong Republican party in the 20th century. In 2014, the foreign-born population increased from 1970’s 1 in 100 to 1 in 9 in 2012, University of Virginia researchers found in census data. Since 2008, the commonwealth has consistently voted for Democrat presidential candidates and has elected Democrats statewide consistently since 2013. The Old Dominion is changing rapidly as it moves away from Republicans, and becoming a reliably liberal state.
