Republicans are nearing a deal on a compromise plan to rewrite the tax code, the Senate’s deputy leader said Wednesday morning.

“We’re very close,” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) told POLITICO. “I don’t want to get out in front of the chairmen but we’ve very close.”

Asked if he expects an announcement today, Cornyn said: “I hope so — we’ve got to get this thing wrapped up so we can get it on the floor next week.”
