Pro-Trump Congressman To Retire, Here’s Why

Congressman and House Freedom Caucus member, Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), announced his retirement.

Initially, when asked for a comment, Franks seemed coy, merely saying, “We will have a statement a little bit later, but that’s all I can tell you right now.” Franks continued, “the statement will explain.”

One fellow Republican official said there were allegations of inappropriate behavior that have dogged Representative Franks for years.

The Washington Post reported the reason after the speculation popped earlier in the afternoon:

Rep. Trent Franks, an Arizona Republican who is among the most conservative members of the House, said Thursday he would resign his seat in a statement where he acknowledged asking two female subordinates to bear his surrogate children.

Franks’s announcement came as the House Ethics Committee said it would create a special subcommittee to investigate Franks for conduct “that constitutes sexual harassment and/or retaliation for opposing sexual harassment.”

Franks said in his statement that the probe concerns his “discussion of surrogacy with two previous female subordinates, making each feel uncomfortable.” He denied ever having “physically intimidated, coerced, or had, or attempted to have, any sexual contact with any member of my congressional staff.”

Franks’ resignation will be effective on January 31, 2018.

The Arizona Republican had apparently planned to run for Senate in 2012 but abruptly scrapped his campaign.
