The lamestream media got this entire election wrong, and in the wake of their complete and utter failure, many have called for reasonable reforms, calling out the backslapping, D.C. centered culture that has insulated reporters from ordinary Americans, and, well, reality.
The media’s response to these calls for reforms has suggested that they’re in a state of total denial. First, they latched on to the notion that millions of Americans were duped into voting for Trump by “fake news” and now, they’re arguing that Russians literally handed the election to Donald Trump; and now, rather than admonishing those who are part of the problem, they’re elevating them. Take Glenn Thrush:
Politico’s Glenn Thrush, who was exposed in WikiLeaks emails sending stories to Hillary Clinton staffers before publication, will be joining the New York Times to cover the White House, The Huffington Post reported Monday.
“We’re thrilled that Glenn Thrush is joining The Times,” Elisabeth Bumiller, The New York Times’ Washington bureau chief, told The Huffington Post. “He’s a premier political journalist, a master of breaking news and long-form story telling and a stellar addition to our White House team.”
While Bumiller described Thrush as a “premier political journalist,” in one email to Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta, Thrush chose to describe himself as a “hack.”
“No worries Because I have become a hack I will send u the whole section that pertains to u,” Thrush wrote to Podesta in an April 2015 email. “Please don’t share or tell anyone I did this Tell me if I fucked up anything.”
Thrush is everything that is wrong with the DC media. As a reporter, he’s supposed to hold those in power accountable. Instead, he runs to them like a faithful servant begging for scraps. Thrush and those like him are the reason that most Americans don’t trust the lamestream media. When that email leaked, it merely confirmed what conservatives suspected about the mainstream media: that these people play favorites, and that their favorites all happen to be liberal, and that their reporting is tainted by the service of that agenda, and no more legitimate than that on any so called “fake news” site.
Instead of recognizing how damaging this state of affairs is for democratic society, our media class is rewarding the worst offenders.
