Impeachment was not a modern phenomenon before 1998; it was the stuff of history books, when reading about John Tyler and later Andrew Johnson. The idea of impeachment was looming prior to Richard Nixon’s resignation but became a modern political tool when Bill Clinton perjured himself in the Lewinsky scandal. Democrats now wield it reflexively as a political weapon, both in the Bush years and now with President Trump. 
 
Neil Sroka, of the liberal Democracy in America activist group, told Fox News: “Millions of people around the country support impeaching the president. Democratic candidates in deep blue districts can and should be for impeachment, it would be politically stupid for any Democrat to come out against impeachment.”
 
While Democrats in dark blue districts see this as a bonanza to attract money and supporters, others are not so enthusiastic about pursuing a strategy that failed Republicans in 1998, when they lost seats during the Clinton impeachment. Democrats have neither the votes in the Senate nor a strong legal case to pursue charges. If they act rashly, they could further alienate the voters that rebuked them in 2016, showing that they didn’t learn their lesson as they arrogantly reject the wishes of the electorate.
