A Pro-Life Battle Is Brewing In The Senate

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced the Senate will take up the House bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks. With the current 51-49 split, this is an election year mine-field for Democrats.

Depending on the health of Sen. McCain (R-Ariz.), Republicans have 49-50 votes they can use; Sen. Murkowski (R-Alaska) is pro-choice. This means that to ensure the bill advances, Democrats will have to vote.

Democrats have several Senators that claim to be pro-life but have their own primaries to face at home, where there is sure to be pro-abortion pressure from their respective bases. For them, this will be a tough vote when the time comes.

In a cycle when so many Democrats will be up, they have to choose between pro-life general election voters and pro-abortion primary voters. If they fail to choose wisely, they won’t be back in 2019.
