The Trump White House is considering issuing “War Bonds” to fund the federal government’s “war” against COVID-19.

This COVID-19-related-Treasury bond would be used for virus response and to ignite economic investment in the wake of the damage the virus has done to the US economy.

White House economic advisor ran the idea past President Trump and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin this week.

Kudlow told CNBC host Jim Cramer on Monday that he liked the broadcaster’s notion of a “covid war bond” and that he would present it to Trump. The government should consider “levers” that might be “unusual but timely and important means of federal finance” in a time of crisis, Kudlow said.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Kudlow told Cramer. “Obviously I’ve talked to our colleagues about this, whatever the maturity and the exact rate would be. This is a time, it seems to me, to sell bonds in order to raise money for the war effort, in this case the pandemic effort, in this case the effort to keep families and individuals and businesses afloat.

“This would be a long-term investment into the future of American health, safety and the economy, so from my standpoint, technical considerations aside, I think the concept is exactly right,” Kudlow said Monday.

This isn’t the first time since World War II “war bonds” have been flirted with to fight a war. In 2014 former Congressman Kerry Bentivolio (R-MI) introduced a bill called the ROAR Act to fight the “war” on potholes. An idea he called a “win/win for everybody.”

“It doesn’t raise taxes. It’s deficit neutral,” he stated. “It’s a great way to fund our roads and put the power of the purse into the hands of the American public.”

Bentivolio’s bond bill, like most well-intentioned legislation, didn’t receive a vote in Congress. However, “war bonds” to fight the COVID-19 might see a different result this time around with the White House’s backing.
