Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) told the media that he would vote to confirm a justice if a slot had opened up and Trump had appointed one. Hawley had the following comment to explain his reasoning: “In 2016, you had a lame-duck president who was not going to be there no matter what. This time you’ve got a president who is running for reelection. He’s on the ballot in November. The Supreme Court is going to be a central issue of the campaign”.
