California Rep. Eric Swalwell is pushing the panic button after the bombshell investigation from Axios detailed his extensive ties to a suspected Chinese spy. Swalwell is following the trend set by other Democrats who have found themselves at the center of a major scandal: he’s blaming President Trump. The Democrat is claiming that President Trump was behind the yearlong investigation by Axios as retribution for Swalwell’s work to impeach the President.

News broke that Swalwell was one of multiple Democrat politicians targetted by suspected Chinese spy, Fang Fang also known as Christine Fang between 2011 and 2015. The suspected spy helped fundraise for rep. Swalwell’s 2014 re-election, however, did not make any contributions.

According to the story, federal investigators became alarmed by Fang’s activities and delivered a defensive briefing to Rep. Swalwell. Upon being alerted of the concerns surrounding Fang Rep. Swalwell “immediately cut off all ties.”

Before Fang fled the United States in 2015 she was able to successfully place at least one intern in Swalwell’s office.

Townhall reports:

“Through campaign fundraising, extensive networking, personal charisma, and romantic or sexual relationships with at least two Midwestern mayors, Fang was able to gain proximity to political power, according to current and former U.S. intelligence officials and one former elected official,” Axios reported, adding that while senior intelligence officials don’t believe she ever handled classified information, “there were some really, really sensitive people that were caught up” in the alleged spy’s network.

“I’ve been a critic of the president. I’ve spoken out against him. I was on both committees that worked to impeach him. The timing feels like that should be looked at,” he told Politico on Tuesday.

“What it appears though that this person — as the story reports — was unsuccessful in whatever they were trying to do. But if intelligence officials are trying to weaponize someone’s cooperation, they are essentially seeking to do what this person was not able to do, which is to try and discredit someone,” he added.

Rep. Swalwell was one of the most vocal House Democrats who pushed the Russia collusion narrative. The California Democrat currently serves on the House Intelligence Committee, though some lawmakers are questioning if he should be removed from office.
