As the impeachment trial is underway in the Senate both teams are set to argue about the constitutionality of the entire trial. While Trump’s defense team argues there is no historical precedent and the Constitution clearly outlines impeachment only applies to elected officials currently in office. However, the Democrat impeachment managers claim the opposite and are seeking to convict Trump to alleviate the impending threat of him running for office again. The left is united in believing the trial is aligned with the Constitution but the Republican Party can’t say the same. In order to convict Trump on insurrection charges, 17 Republicans will have to vote to convict Trump.
