House Republicans are requesting FBI Director Christopher Wray hold a briefing in regards to Rep. Eric Swalwell’s connection to suspected Chinese spy, Christine Fang. In a letter to Wray, House Republicans write that lawmakers must be informed of the “full extent” Chinese target members of Congress.

In December, Axios broke a bombshell story detailing how a suspected Chinese Spy, Christine Fang, inserted herself into Swalwell’s inner circle. Fang reportedly targetted up and coming politicians with the potential to become national political figures. Fang worked closely with Swalwell, helping raise funds for his reelection campaign, and even placed at least one intern in his California office.

Fox News reports:

“As our nation faces a growing security threat from the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) attempts to infiltrate and undermine the United States Government, we write to request a full briefing regarding counterintelligence threats to Members of Congress, including information related to Rep. Eric Swalwell’s ties to a suspected Chinese intelligence operative,” says the letter from 14 House Republicans, including Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C. and Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member John Katko, R-N.Y.

But Republicans have continued to express concern about the connection. The lawmakers noted Swalwell’s position on committees such as the House Homeland Security Committee, where lawmakers are given access to classified information.

“This includes information classified as Top Secret, which by its very nature ‘could reasonably be expected to cause exceptionally grave damage to the national security’ if subject to unauthorized disclosure,” they write.

They said a Dec. 18 classified briefing for Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on the subject raised additional questions “including how Rep. Swalwell could be re-appointed to the Committee on Homeland Security one month after this briefing.”
