South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham says that Trump has the power to reinvigorate and build the Republican party or destroy it altogether. During an interview with Axios, Graham remarked how Trump, regardless of losing the 2020 election, is still seen as the party’s leader and holds extreme influence. Graham noted that Trump has the potential to make the Republican Party “something that nobody else I know can make it.
Fox News reports:
“He can make I bigger; he can make it stronger; he can make it more diverse; and he could destroy it,” he said.
Graham told the news show that it is significant that Trump was able to win the presidency, which was something that Sen. Mitt Romney and the late Sen. John McCain were unable to pull off. He told Axios that Trump has a dark side but alas “there’s some magic there.”
Graham appeared to be willing to sever ties with Trump after the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol when he said Trump had been a “consequential” president, “but today…count me out. Enough is enough.”
But Graham said in the interview that he is trying to maintain his relationship with Trump and still considers him a friend. He said he believes the best path for the party going forward is with Trump.
Trump has already endorsed a number of Republicans heading into midterm elections and has hinted at another run for the White House in 2024. The former president has stopped short of confirming he will run again yet many are anxiously awaiting the announcement.
