The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker is running for office instead of touchdowns.

The ex-NFL running back, 59, joins several other Republicans trying to tackle Democratic incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock out of office in the 2022 midterm race.

Former President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind the University of Georgia star and rookie politician, who was born in the state, but hasn’t lived there in over thirty years.

“Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the legendary Herschel Walker ran for the United States Senate in Georgia? He would be unstoppable, just like he was when he played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and in the NFL,” Trump said in a statement from his Save America PAC. “He is also a GREAT person. Run Herschel, run!”

Herschel started off his professional football career in the USFL with the Trump-owned New Jersey Generals, before transitioning to the NFL to play for the Vikings, Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants.

He spoke at the 2020 Republican National Convention in support of the former president and attended his recent 75th birthday party in New Jersey.

“[Walker’s] a great guy, he’s a patriot, and he’s a very loyal person, he’s a very strong person. They love him in Georgia, I tell you,” Trump remarked in June.

The former pro-athlete registered to vote for the first time last week, using the address of his wife’s property in Atlanta and filed papers with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday.

Walker will fight to take the seat from Democrat Warnock, who narrowly beat out Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a January 2021 special election, to fill in for the remainder of retired GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson’s six-year term.

He joins Georgia’s agriculture commissioner Gary Black, Navy veteran Latham Saddler, and contractor Kelvin King in the midterm election.
