The Wyoming Republican Party voted over the weekend to no longer recognize Rep. Liz Cheney as a member of the GOP.

The state party central committee voted 31-29 on Saturday to stop acknowledging Cheney as a Republican, as did local GOP officials in one-third of the state’s 23 counties.

This is the third in-party attack that Cheney has faced since voting to impeach former president Trump for “inciting the mob” during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. In February, the state’s GOP voted to censure the senator, and in May she was removed from a top congressional leadership position over her continued criticism of Trump.

She is currently one of two Republicans involved in the House select committee’s investigation of the Capitol riot, and serves as the vice chair.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell reportedly advised Cheney to back down when she insisted that Senate Republicans made a mistake by blocking a bipartisan commission to probe the events of Jan. 6.

In a phone call over the summer, he purportedly cautioned that challenging Trump would harm Republicans in upcoming elections and damage her own chances of reelection. Cheney faces a minimum of four Republican opponents in the upcoming 2022 primary, including Harriet Hageman, who has been endorsed by Trump.

“Liz Cheney stopped recognizing what Wyomingites care about a long time ago. When she launched her war against President Trump, she completely broke with where we are as a state,” Hageman commented.

A recent CNN panel pondered if Cheney would have better luck running for president in 2024, to which Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) had a mocking response: “Yes,” Cruz tweeted. “It’s called the Democratic primary.”

Her spokesperson Jeremy Adler said it was “laughable” that Cheney be considered anything other than “a committed conservative Republican.

“She is bound by her oath to the Constitution,” he remarked in a statement. “Sadly, a portion of the Wyoming GOP leadership has abandoned that fundamental principle, and instead allowed themselves to be held hostage to the lies of a dangerous and irrational man.”
