On Thursday, a group of Georgia voters filed a lawsuit to prevent Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene from running for a second term in Congress. The Georgia group filed the lawsuit with secretary of state Brad Raffensperger argues Rep. Greene is unfit for office.
The Washington Examiner reports:
The congresswoman has violated the Constitution’s “Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause,” the lawsuit reads.
The provision, which was birthed following the Civil War, bars politicians from pursuing office if they have participated in “insurrection or rebellion” against the nation or “given aid or comfort” to enemies of the state, according to a report.
“After taking the oath to defend and protect the Constitution, before, on, and after Jan. 6, 2021, Greene voluntarily aided and engaged in an insurrection to obstruct the peaceful transfer of presidential power,” according to the suit.
The case against Greene is slated to be argued before an administrative law judge, according to the report.
North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn recently faced a similar effort to prohibit him from seeking a second term in Congress.
