A federal judge says that former President Trump likely broke the law by trying to obstruct Congress from confirming Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

Judge David Carter wrote in a court ruling that had Trump’s plan with John Eastman had succeeded it would have “permanently ended the peaceful transition of power, undermining American democracy and the Constitution.”

CNBC reports:

“If the country does not commit to investigating and pursuing accountability for those responsible, the Court fears January 6 will repeat itself,” Carter wrote in the ruling in U.S. District Court for the Central District in California.

The judge’s stinging comments came in a decision that ordered Eastman to disclose 101 documents to the select House committee that is investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and events leading up to it.

Carter wrote that 10 other documents should not be turned over to the committee, finding that they are privileged.

Eastman wrote a memo that had detailed how Vice President Mike Pence could reject the certification of Biden’s election win by a joint session on Congress on Jan. 6, 2021.

Eastman, among other Trump allies, spoke at a rally taking place at the same time as the certification process and urged Pence to reject the results. Soon after a mob of protestors marched to the Capitol where some broke into the building.
