Chief Justice John Roberts has called for an investigation into who leaked a Supreme Court draft opinion suggesting the Court is preparing to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.
Justice Roberts also released a memo regarding the investigation and the leak. In the memo, Roberts goes on to explain that though the documents shared with the press are legitimate they do not represent any official ruling from the Court and is instead one of multiple opinions being circulated amongst justices, as is customary with all cases.
Roberts wrote:
“To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the Court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operation, it will not succeed. The work of the Court will not be affected in any way.
We at the Court are blessed to have a workforce – permanent employees and law clerks alike- intensely loyal to the institution and dedicated to the rule of law. Court employees have an exemplary and important tradition of respecting the confidentiality of the judicial process and upholding the trust of the Court. This was a singular and egregious breach of that trust that is an affront to the Court and the community of public servants who work here.
I have directed the Marshal of the Court to launch an investigation into the source of the leak.”

Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday directed the marshal of the Supreme Court to launch an investigation into the source of a leaked draft opinion showing that a majority of justices were poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“This was a singular and egregious breach of that trust that is an affront to the Court and the community of public servants who work here,” Roberts said in a press release that verified the authenticity of the document published Monday evening by Politico.
