Liberal Texas candidate Jessica Cisneros announced on Monday that she will file for a recount in the razor-thin Democrat primary run-ff against incumbent Rep. Henry Cuellar.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Cisneros, who has been endorsed by multiple members of the “Squad,” including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), highlighted the key differences between her and her incumbent opponent as reasons to pursue a recount for the Democratic primary in Texas’s 28th Congressional District.

“Our community isn’t done fighting, we are filing for a recount,” Cisneros said in a statement. “With just under 0.6 percent of the vote symbolizing such stark differences for the future in South Texas, I owe it to our community to see this through to the end.”

The key runoff election has garnered national attention after the candidates’ positions on abortion were brought to the forefront. Cuellar was the sole House Democrat to vote against a bill in 2021 that would have codified the right to abortion in federal law, an issue that has been underscored after a leaked draft opinion indicated that the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Cuellar has declared victory in the race twice — once after election night May 25 and again on June 3. However, a runoff candidate may request a recount by 5 p.m. Wednesday if the margin is less than 10% received by the opponent.
