Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski is in danger of losing her Senate seat after decades of work to a challenger of her own party. FiveThirtyEight forecasts Kelly C. Tshibaka as the winning candidate, over Murkowski. After supporting the impeachment of President Trump, Murkowski has found herself in a good bit of controversy over it. Now, bringing in Tshibaka, the party may get a Trump approved candidate.

Murkowski has faced criticism within the party for voting to impeach President Trump but also not doing enough to fight against President Biden’s agenda. She has been considered a swing voter since her appointment to the senate in 2002, and is ranked as one of the most liberal senate Republicans according to a 2017 GovTrack analysis. While Tshibaka, who previously served as the commissioner for the Alaska Department of Administration, comes with high recommendations from President Trump.

Both Tshibaka and Murkowski will appear on the ballot next month. This being due to Alaska’s new 2020 ballot measure including ranked-choice voting in state elections. They will face Democratic candidate Patricia Chesbro, though the Republican party has a 99% chance of winning next month’s Alaska senate election.
