An Uptick In Leftist Twitter Fact-Checking Draws Praise

Twitter users have seen a surge in fact-checking the left after Elon Musk’s takeover of the social media platform. Since the deal with Musk became official on October 26th an uptick in fact-checking liberal politicians and entities has risen. For years conservatives have noted that fact-checking organizations have overanalyzed the right while ignoring the left. NewsBusters Executive Editor published a study on September 28th that cited “Biden was fact-checked 40 times, while Biden critics were checked on 230 occasions, a disparity of six-to-one.”

Beverly Hallberg, the president and founder of District Media Group, told Fox News that the Musk takeover is really appealing to those in the middle as:

“What we’re seeing right now is Twitter trying new features; charging for blue checkmarks, for example, and relaunching Birdwatch, a crowdsourced fact-checking program. It’s giving users more choice in how they want their Twitter experience to be, and for the free market lovers that should be viewed as a good thing.”

There have been many examples of fact-checking towards the left though in a tweet from Townhall.com reporter Mia Cathell the evidence can be seen in tweets from the White House, and Biden’s Twitter.

Many of the fact-checking popups originate from user-based Birdwatch, which has been around since before the Musk takeover but has seen a surge in signups in the past several weeks. As the service allows Twitter users to check and flag information on Twitter that they find wrong or should be preceded with warning labels.
