This comes following the second balloon having been spotted in Latin America, as well as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has indefinitely postponed his trip to China following the recently confirmed Chinese state-owned balloon flying in United States air space over Montana for potential spying purposes.

Currently, the second Chinese spy balloon in Latin America is being assessed as a second Chinese surveillance balloon, according to Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder – likely removing all credibility of China’s excuse for the initial balloon spotted in Montana.

The Pentagon has confirmed that the balloon spotted in Latin America hasn’t been examined, however, it is being reported that the belief is that this second Chinese balloon was with the intention of spying purposes. It is currently unclear what the Chinese government plans to do with these surveillance balloons, and what the balloon has access to, but there appears to be a significant concern within military and intelligence circles about their intentions for collecting information in this way.

According to Fox News:

Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told Fox News on Friday night that “We are seeing reports of a balloon transiting Latin America. We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon.”

At this time, the Pentagon has not released any specifics on possible plans for responding to the balloons or any actions that China may take in response to the U.S.’s increased surveillance activity.

Original story having the Chinese spy balloon’s initial sighting:

The People’s Republic of China has confirmed that the balloon craft that floated over the northern United States was theirs. Thursday, the Pentagon had confirmed that they had spotted what they suspected to be a “Chinese surveillance balloon,” though now China has taken responsibility.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has claimed that the balloon was not supposed to enter U.S. airspace, and that it was a civilian research airship. Though the United States did detect and track the craft as it moved across the country in states such as Montana. It however did not seem to be posing a military or physical threat according to the Pentagon.

According to Fox News China issued the following statement,

“The airship is from China. It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological, purposes,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed Friday. “Affected by the Westerlies and with limited self-steering capability, the airship deviated far from its planned course.”

The spokesperson said China regrets the incident.

The statement continued, “The Chinese side regrets the unintended entry of the airship into US airspace due to force majeure. The Chinese side will continue communicating with the US side and properly handle this unexpected situation caused by force majeure.”

This is still an ongoing story, updates will be provided when they’re made available.
