Attorney General Merrick Garland has named Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss as a special counsel to lead the investigation into President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. The decision came after Weiss requested to be appointed to the role, with Garland determining that the move would be in the public interest.

Garland stated:

“I’m here today to announce the appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel consistent with the Department of Justice regulations governing such matters. In keeping with those regulations, I have today notified the designated members of each House of Congress of the appointment,”

“This appointment confirms my commitment to provide Mr. Weiss all the resources he requests. It also reaffirms that Mr. Weiss has the authority he needs to conduct a thorough investigation and to continue to take the steps he deems appropriate in dependently based only on the facts and the law.”

In response to the appointment, Garland emphasized his commitment to provide Weiss with all necessary resources and confirmed Weiss’s authority to conduct a comprehensive investigation based solely on facts and law. This comes as the first instance of Weiss seeking a special counsel appointment, countering claims made by an IRS whistleblower. Garland has assured that Weiss will maintain his authority to oversee the investigation and make decisions regarding any potential charges.
