The last fortnight has witnessed a truly unseemly spectacle. Federal functionaries, advisors, and even Cabinet secretaries have abandoned the Trump Administration, blamed Donald J. Trump for the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot (which he neither ordered nor incited), and then kicked ritual gravel into the eyes of the soon-to-be-former president. Some of this smacks of virtue signaling. Other cases reek of resume laundering; a nasty resignation letter on the way out the door might help future employers “contextualize” a C.V. passage that reflects time on Team Trump.
Thus, it was refreshing this morning to see the resignation letter of National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot. He expressed his plans to leave the White House effective Wednesday, as is customary, when Joe Biden’s presidency will begin. Ullyot also took the occasion to recap many of the reasons for his pride in helping to implement President Trump’s America First agenda.
“It has been an honor to serve you during one of the most productive times in NSC history,” Ullyot wrote the president. Among just 10 of the administration’s 605 path-breaking accomplishments, Ullyot cited:
• “Building a new international consensus on China by standing up to its aggression in all its forms;
• “Bringing Iran’s economy to its knees and choking off funds to its terrorist allies;
• “Eliminating the ISIS physical Caliphate, once the size of Great Britain;
• “Rebuilding our military and establishing the Space Force, the first new branch of the Armed Forces in 70 years;
• “Reducing undocumented migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico by 85 percent…”
The Harvard graduate and U.S. Marine intelligence officer previously spent seven years as a senior staffer to then-senators John Warner (R – Virginia) and Arlen Specter (R – Pennsylvania). He also is (at least for the next few hours) among the highest-ranking gay officials in any administration, Democrat or Republican.
Ullyot was an early Trump supporter and was on the 2016 presidential campaign. He has worked closely with journalists, in private business and in government. In fact, several other ink-stained wretches and I looked to Ullyot as a sort of camp counselor as we covered NSC chief Robert C. O’Brien’s diplomatic missions to Paris in July and to Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines in November.
As Ullyot’s letter indicates, the tens of thousands who served President Donald J. Trump should feel abundant pride in the hundreds of advances that they helped him achieve, at home and abroad, on behalf of the American people. As they clear their desks and click off their lights in the West Wing and across Washington, D.C., they all should exit with their heads held as high as that of Mr. John Ullyot.
