Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has informed Republicans that he is opposed to the House’s bipartisan bill to create a commission to investigate the origins of the Jan. 6th Capitol riot.

Politico reports:

McConnell had signaled on Tuesday that he was undecided but came down more firmly after another day of deliberations, according to a person with direct knowledge of his remarks. The Kentucky Republican’s stance casts serious doubt on the future of legislation creating a bipartisan commission on the Capitol riot — a bill set to pass the House later Wednesday — if major changes aren’t made.

Both former President Donald Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) are opposed to the commission proposal.

Rep. McCarthy says that he is opposed to the bill because it does not investigate political violence pushed by violent riots in American cities last summer.

Trump released a statement attacking Nancy Pelosi’s proposal for the independent commission, calling it a “trap.”

“Republicans in the House and Senate should not approve the Democrat trap of the January 6 Commission. It is just more partisan unfairness and unless the murders, riots, and fire bombings in Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago, and New York are also going to be studied, this discussion should be ended immediately. Republicans must get much tougher and much smarter, and stop being used by the Radical Left. Hopefully, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are listening!,” Trump wrote.
