Former President Trump has officially backed a candidate for attorney general of Texas. Monday evening Trump released a statement endorsing incumbent attorney general Ken Paxton for another term.
Trump said, “Attorney General Ken Paxton has been bravely on the front line in the fight for Texas, and America, against the vicious and very dangerous Radical Left Democrats, and the foolish and unsuspecting RINOs that are destroying our Country. Ken is strong on Crime, Border Security, the Second Amendment, Election Integrity and, above all, our Constitution. He loves our Military and our Vets. It is going to take a PATRIOT like Ken Paxton to advance America First policies in order to Make America Great Again. Ken has my Complete and Total Endorsement for another term as Attorney General of Texas. He is a true Texan who will keep Texas safe—and will never let you down!”
The Washington Examiner reports:
Bush, the Texas land commissioner, vowed to align himself with Trump despite vocal opposition from many in his family, including his father, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who sparred with then-candidate Trump during the 2016 presidential debates.
The younger Bush in late May tweeted a picture of himself on the phone with Trump, suggesting the two were discussing his plans to seek higher office.
Paxton has been a longtime supporter of Trump and filed a lawsuit last year challenging the former president’s election loss in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately tossed the case because Texas lacked enough standing to bring it to court.
The Texas attorney general is also under indictment for alleged securities fraud and is facing an inquiry by the FBI over alleged abuse of office.
In May, Trump said he liked both Republican candidates “very much” yet it seems Paxton’s loyalty finally paid off.
