After the devastating school shooting Monday at The Covenant School, a Christian elementary school, President Biden – who was supposed in the East Room of the White House discussing the tragedy – joked that he only came downstairs for ice cream. The tragic school shooting, which was statistically unexpected, claimed the lives of three adult facility members and three children in the school Monday morning. Now the President is under fire, yet again, for making light of the situation with a diatribe on ice cream.

Before making any remarks on the Nashville school shootings, Biden stated:

“My name is Joe Biden. I’m Dr. Jill Biden’s husband…I eat Jeni’s ice cream — chocolate chip. I came down because I heard there was chocolate chip ice cream…By the way, I have a whole refrigerator full upstairs…You think I’m kidding? I’m not.”

Biden however did end up making a few remarks, about the shooting, after looking for ice cream. He did call the shooting “sick” and “heartbreaking” while demanding that Congress needed to do more. Though how are we supposed to take the President seriously when he came in joking and inquiring about ice cream to a room expecting to hear something heartfelt and serious from the commander-in-chief?

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told Fox that, “say[ing] that he misunderstood the moment would be an understatement…You know, the president is watching, you’d hope before he comes down there, the awful scenes from the shooting and the reactions of family members and friends of people in that school. And to be coming down, joking about the fact that he’s Jill Biden’s husband and looking for chocolate chip ice cream is hardly the way to start it.”

Christie continued to say,

“There’s no way to talk about something like this except to say that for all of us who are parents, what we dread every day is the news about the health and life of our children,” he added. “And so there’s no room to joke in that circumstance at all. And certainly not from the President of the United States.”

During Monday’s tragic school shooting at a Nashville-based private Christian elementary school, three students and three staffers were killed by a shooter. Authorities have identified the perpetrator as Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old biological female identified as a transgender man. Hale was confirmed to have been a former student at the school. Hale, who resided in Nashville, was killed by law enforcement officials. NBC released a report revealing her identity as the shooter.

Female mass shooters account for only 2% of all such incidents in the United States, according to the Violence Project database. Hale is the fifth female mass shooter in U.S. history, and the first to commit a school shooting of this nature. The shooting occurred at the Covenant School, where investigators found a car that helped them determine the shooter’s identity, as stated by Metro Nashville Chief of Police John Drake during a press conference.
