Trump’s Response to Possible Indictment
Former U.S. President Donald Trump denied on Thursday that his attorneys received any warning about an impending indictment from the office of special counsel Jack Smith.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump stated that his legal team had a productive discussion with the Department of Justice (DOJ), where they reiterated his innocence and suggested that an indictment would be detrimental to the nation, saying:
“My attorneys had a productive meeting with the DOJ this morning, explaining in detail that I did nothing wrong, was advised by many lawyers, and that an Indictment of me would only further destroy our Country. No indication of notice was given during the meeting — Do not trust the Fake News on anything!”
Possible Third Indictment and Trump’s Outrage
Trump’s attorneys, Todd Blanche and John Lauro, were advised to prepare for a potential third indictment related to the January 6 investigation. Trump expressed anger at being targeted and criticized the DOJ’s involvement, calling it a “political weaponization of law enforcement”.
Trump’s Popularity and Political Prospects Amid Legal Troubles
Despite the looming legal troubles, Trump’s popularity appears unfazed, as seen in recent polls. A Rasmussen Reports survey indicated that most likely voters don’t believe the political prosecutions will negatively impact Trump’s chances in the 2024 elections.
