Former Oklahoma Republican Senator Tom Coburn has died at the age of 72, according to the Washington Post.

Coburn, a physician by trade, served in the United States Senate from 2005 to 2015. He announced in 2014 he would resign from the Senate due to a “serious recurrence” of cancer.

Prior to his Senate tenure, he served in the House of Representatives and was elected in 1994 during the ‘Republican Revolution’ led by Newt Gingrich. Upon being elected to the house, he limited himself to three terms and lived up to that promise by declining to run for re-election in 2000.

While in Congress, Coburn was a staunch fiscal hawk & proponent of small government. The Oklahoman refers to him as a “powerful force in Congress on fiscal matters” and every bit of those words is correct.

In addition to being a force, he was well regarded by his colleagues.
Coburn’s family announced a memorial date will be held at a later date.
