The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was attacked by hackers over the weekend as the agency worked to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, Bloomberg News reported Monday.
Bloomberg cited anonymous sources while reporting that the hackers accessed HHS’s systems on Sunday night, but were not able to steal anything. The hackers' apparent goal was instead to slow the system down.
According to the report, a White House National Security Council (NSC) tweet on Sunday was linked to the hack following the government confirmed that false information was circulating due to it.
It remains unclear who was responsible for the attack but the good news is nothing was stolen by the hackers.
Both HHS and the NSC did not immediately respond to The Hill’s requests for comment.
