CBS News Delivers Bad News to Employees

CBS News is the latest media organization to get sideswiped by the coronavirus’s economic impact.

The parent company of the news organization, ViacomCBS, laid off 300 employees – 25% of the layoffs affected the CBS News division.

One of the notable layoffs includes White House reporter Mark Knoller, according to a tweet from journalist Yashar Ali.

In a memo, CBS President Susan Zirinsky explained the company’s turmoil, “no one could have foreseen the economic fallout from the pandemic coming on top of the cost savings initiatives already underway from the merger of CBS and Viacom. As a result, we have scrutinized our entire business model, our budgets, and what we learned in newsgathering during the last months. We are not alone; media companies and businesses all over the country are re-organizing and developing new operating models.”

ViacomCBS reported a 6% year over year decline in revenue in the first quarter of 2020 of 6% and a 74% decline in operating net earnings.

CBS derives more than a third of its revenue from advertising. Coronavirus has likely strained CBS further as advertiser’s budgets has decreased amidst the economic uncertainty.
