Facebook Makes Announcement on Trump Ban

Facebook has announced that former President Trump will be banned from the platform until at least Jan. 7, 2023, the marks two full years since his initial ban. It’s unclear if the former president will then actually be allowed back on the platform, Facebook said it will evaluate the “risk to public safety” regarding restoring his account. The announcement led Trump to drop his strongest indication about his 2024 political plans yet.

The decision even made Trump issue a statement that looked like he was declaring for 2024:

“Next time I’m in the White House there will be no more dinners, at his request, with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife. It will be all business!” Trump said.

“Next time” is an incredibly powerful statement from the 45th and possibly 47th president.

The Hill reports:

“We know that any penalty we apply — or choose not to apply — will be controversial,” Facebook’s Nick Clegg said in a blog post. “We know today’s decision will be criticized by many people on opposing sides of the political divide — but our job is to make a decision in as proportionate, fair and transparent a way as possible, in keeping with the instruction given to us by the Oversight Board.”

The suspension is being made under new enforcement protocols announced Friday in response to the company’s Oversight Board ruling that the initial indefinite suspension was not appropriate.

If Trump’s account is ultimately restored Facebook says he will be subject to a strict set of sanctions. The date coincides with the year before the next presidential election which Trump has teased he will enter.

Trump reacted to the ban calling it an insult to his supporters.

“Facebook’s ruling is an insult to the record-setting 75M people, plus many others, who voted for us in the 2020 Rigged Presidential Election,” Trump wrote in a statement. “They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this censoring and silencing, and ultimately, we will win. Our Country can’t take this abuse anymore!”
