Some California families are taking matters into their own hands as crime continues to skyrocket. According to reports, more than 150 families in San Francisco have employed private security to help ward off crime which has become all too common in neighborhoods. Reports of car break-ins, petty theft, and home burglaries have jumped 753% percent in the city from May 2020 to May 2021.

Fox News reports:

“We don’t feel safe in our neighborhood,” resident Katie Lyons, told CBS SF. “And we have an alarm, we have cameras on our property, but we want the extra security of having someone have eyes on our place.”

Lyons and other families hired patrol special officer Alan Byard to help patrol the streets of the city’s Marina District following repeated instances of car break-ins and home burglaries.

“It’s a nice area down here, people are afraid of what’s been going on,” said Byard. “They want a safe place to raise their kids. In the last year, I’ve had 10 of my clients move out of the city.”

Another San Francisco resident who has been in the area for over two decades remarked that he’s noticed a distinct uptick in crime.

“Oh absolutely, absolutely. This place used to be – nothing would ever happen here,” he responded.

Some residents say they’re no longer comfortable leaving their home with a purse after night and have been become less comfortable walking around in broad daylight, according to reports other residents say they just opt to drive or take ride services like Uber and Lyft everywhere.
