On Tuesday, six Republican senators voted against an amendment that would eliminate the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) position, which is currently held by Dr. Anthony Fauci.

The proposal led by Kentucky Senator Rand Paul would replace the NIAID with three separate national research institutes.
