President Joe Biden’s decision to rescind the Trump-era Title 42 health order has triggered an onslaught of backlash from Republicans and some Democrats. Two pieces of legislation circulating Congress seek to block the administration’s plan to rescind the policy and have already attracted bipartisan support.
In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) implemented Title 42 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the policy has been used by both the Trump and Biden administrations to quickly expel a majority of migrants at the border. However, last week it was announced the order will end on May 23rd, causing concern that migrant caravans will quickly overwhelm resources at the border.
