The last time the 14th amendment was used was after the civil war to bar confederates from holding office. This was ultimately undone however in 1872 to allow a majority of the confederates to run for office again. This later came up again in the 1970s when Congress symbolically lifted the restrictions from both Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee.
