Mitt Romney, an outspoken critic of Trump and the only Republican in either chamber of Congress who voted to impeach or convict Trump in both of his impeach trials, now has a new claim about the President. The GOP’s 2012 presidential nominee said last week that Trump is the most likely GOP nominee. This came during a Wednesday speaking opportunity in the Capitol last week.

According to NBC News Romney said,

“I think President Trump is by far the most likely to become our nominee,” the Republican senator from Utah said in the Capitol on Wednesday. “If there’s an alternative to that, it would be only realistic if it narrows down to a two-person race at some point.”

While many strategize that Trump could pull off a move similar to that in 2016, if there is a crowded field, others are sure that Trump will take the win no matter what. Currently, he is ahead in polls, and the race can only become more interesting as more candidates surface. Though while many have thrown their support to Trump, including Jim Jordan, and others have left the door to support Trump open, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, Romney has said he would not support the former President.

However, Romney mentioned, “It’s going to be very, very competitive, the primaries, and we’ll hope for the best,” McConnell told reporters. “And obviously I’m gonna support whoever the nominee is.”

A very conflicting story coming from the Utah Senator. Though it can be seen as a win for Trump, as no matter his support to the President he predicted he could win the 2024 GOP primary and subsequently the election.
