Gallup Poll Shows Biden’s Approval Rating at 40 Percent with Majority of Americans Disapproving
A recent Gallup poll revealed that U.S. President Joe Biden’s approval rating has plummeted to 40 percent. The majority of Americans are unhappy with his performance on several key issues, including the economy, energy policy, foreign affairs, and inflation.
Sharp Divisions by Political Affiliation
The poll also showed a sharp divide in approval ratings based on political affiliation. 87 percent of Democrats approve of Biden’s handling of his job, while just three percent of Republicans approve. Democrats express more satisfaction with Biden’s management of the environment and foreign affairs, while Republicans overwhelmingly disapprove of his handling of all four key issues.
Independents Disapprove
Biden’s approval rating among independents has slumped to just 35 percent, down from 61 percent at the start of his presidency. 26 percent of independents approve of his economic efforts, the lowest of all four issues. Gallup’s analysis attributes Biden’s overall low approval rating to his poor performance on the economy, which is also unpopular with Democrats and independents.
Biden’s Reelection Plans
A recent Monmouth University survey showed that only 25 percent of Democrats want Biden to run for reelection in 2024, while 44 percent believe he should step down. Biden has yet to announce his plans, but he is widely expected to seek a second term despite being the oldest president in U.S. history at age 80. If he wins in 2024, he would be 86 at the end of his second term.
Gallup’s Poll Methodology
The Gallup poll was conducted from March 1-23, 2023, with a random sample of 1,009 adults aged 18 and older living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
