President Biden faces concerning news from a recent CNN poll, with 66% of Americans considering his potential victory in the 2024 election a “disaster” or a “setback” for the country. Specifically, 41% of Americans view a Biden win as a “disaster,” while 26% see it as a “setback.” Comparatively, former President Trump had similar figures of 44% and 12%.

The poll also highlights Biden’s low 35% approval rating and declining support among independents, which could pose challenges in retaining support leading up to the 2024 election, especially considering the struggling economy and the possibility of a government shutdown. In terms of the Democratic primary challengers, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. garnered significant support at 20%, while author Marianne Williamson received 8%. These findings raise concerns about Biden’s prospects for reelection, as his approval ratings and primary support face hurdles.

According to Fox News:

CNN political director David Challian provided analysis of the poll that showed 41% of Americans specifically called a Biden win a “disaster,” a slightly better figure than the 44% who said the same about former President Trump. However, another 26% of Americans viewed a Biden win as a “setback” while just 12% said the same about a Trump win. Both front-runners were tied at 27% among those who call each of their wins a “step forward” but Trump held a ten-point lead over Biden among those who would call it a “triumph.”

The CNN poll showed Biden receiving a 35% approval rating, something Chalian commented was “remarkably low.” The breakdown of the data by party showed that while he has 79% support among Democrats, only 26% of independents approved, a nine-point drop since December. Trump had a slightly higher overall approval rating of 37%.

Things only got grimmer for Biden when polled against his Democratic primary challengers. While he himself had earned 60% support, a stunning 20% threw their support behind Robert F. Kennedy Jr. while 8% backed spiritual guru and former 2020 presidential candidate Marianne Williamson and another 8% wanted someone else.

Within the breakdown between Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents showed 67% of party loyalists backing Biden while just 40% of the leaning independents doing the same. But Chalian called RFK Jr.’s support a “potential warning sign” as a solid 32% of those leaning Americans back him while having only 15% of the party loyalists.

The Democratic primary presents potential concerns for Biden’s reelection prospects as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gains significant support, highlighting the uphill battle Biden may face in securing his party’s nomination and maintaining public confidence. On the other side, former President Trump maintains a comfortable lead against his GOP rivals, and newly announced presidential candidate Ron DeSantis faces challenges in catching up to Trump’s level of support. It is increasingly likely that we may witness a rematch between Biden and Trump in 2024, with Trump performing well in the race as Biden’s popularity wanes due to perceived poor performance while in office.
