Starting next Monday, Democrats will try former President Donald J. Trump in the U.S. Senate on a single charge of “incitement of insurrection.” The sole impeachment article blames January 6’s deadly “lawless action at the Capitol” on Trump’s statements, including: “if you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore.’”

Is this the best that Democrats can do?

This standard political jargon is unrelated to force. Top Democrats routinely use this anodyne phrase. Stop and stare at how promiscuously they have deployed these supposedly insurrection-inducing words just over the last year.

U.S. Representative Gil Cisneros (D – California) said on February 26 that Orange County Democrats would have to “recruit and fight like hell” to compete against Republicans.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D – New York) told Hispanic leaders on a May 2 conference call that “Democrats are going to fight like hell” for COVID-19-related government assistance.

Schumer said on June 8 that Democrats would “fight like hell” for police reform after the atrocious murder of George Floyd on May 25.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D – Connecticut) said on September 19 that, “as matter of principle, I’m going to fight like hell” against any conservative nominee whom President Trump nominated to fill the U.S. Supreme Court seat of the late Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio said on September 23 that he and other Democrats would “fight like hell” against a Brett Kavanaugh-like replacement for Ginsburg.

Kevin Sheekey, an advisor to Michael Bloomberg, explained on November 4 that the Democrat multi-billionaire spent $100 million in the Sunshine State “To make Trump fight like hell in Florida.”

After Republicans boosted their state-legislative seats in Tallahassee, State Representative Evan Jenne (D – Florida) said on November 7: “Our mission is to fight like hell and do whatever we can to slow these bills down, to beat them up, make them as ugly as possible.”

“I want to make sure we’re going to fight like hell by investing in America first,”  President-elect Joe Biden said on December 1.

Announcing Denis McDonough as his nominee for Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Biden said on December 11: “I have given Denis a clear mission: fight like hell — fight like hell — for veterans and their families.”

State Senator Shevrin Jones (D – Florida) expressed Sunshine State Democrats’ opposition to a new GOP school-choice-expansion bill. Jones said on January 19, “We’re going to have to fight like hell on this one.”

Former President Trump’s defense attorneys would be wise to present on video these and earlier examples of Democrats uttering this political boilerplate. Such a video would offer Americans compelling — and hilarious — viewing from the Senate floor to the streets of Sarasota, San Diego, and Seattle.

Between now and the trial’s start next week, Democrat impeachment managers should do themselves a huge favor and fight like hell for actual evidence of Donald J. Trump’s incitement of insurrection.
