Are you familiar with the name Christine Blasey Ford? How about the name Tara Reade? Chances are you may know the former, but not the latter. If you know both, kudos. You’ve been paying attention but you are one of the few.
Those who remember Blasey Ford can recollect her emotional testimony during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation and the accompanying media coverage.
She accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault – an incident which allegedly took place when she was 15 and he was 17 – before disappearing from the spotlight along with the media reports after his confirmation.
Given the high profile of Supreme Court confirmations, it’s not a surprise the media covered her story with such intent.
Fast forward to 2020, the stakes are high with America heading to the ballot box in November to choose the leader of the free world.
Enter: Tara Reade.
Last week, a woman named Tara Reade accused presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden of sexual assault. An incident she alleges took place in Biden’s office in the 1990s when she was a staffer for Biden.
She detailed the incident to Krystal Ball from The Hill, “He was at first talking to someone, they went away. He said come here. And then when I gave him the gym bag it happened in one mounting almost and he had me against the wall. And then his hands were down my skirt and up my skirt.”
“[He] entered me with his hands as was trying to kiss me and sing to me,” she continued.
“He was trying to kiss me as I was pulling away. What I remember about that time is feeling really shocked [or] surprised. There was no real conversation right beforehand. There was no real precursor. This just happened.” she explained.
“I was obviously pulling away. He pulled back and said ‘hey man, I heard you liked me’ …something to that effect. And that’s what kind of jolted me. Like I was trying to think what I did wrong to bring that on me. And then...he looked angry or irritated with me…that’s when I knew I was in a very difficult position,” Reade continued.
According to reports, Reade told several people about the incident at the time, including her brother, mother, and friend who worked for another Senator. Her mother urged her to call the police, but her brother talked her out of it.
Now you might be wondering how is it possible this hasn’t received wall-to-wall news coverage from the networks? Did you somehow miss it?
By Daily Wire’s account, CNN, The New York Times, MSNBC, and Washington Post have failed to report on the story in the six days following the initial report by The Intercept.
An investigation by The Daily Wire uncovered that all four of the aforementioned outlets mentioned Blasey Ford at least 90+ times EACH in the following 6 days of her allegations compared to ZERO mentions of Tara Reade in the same time period.
In the case of Blasey Ford, there were no corroborating accounts or anyone who could verify her and Kavanaugh met. This contrasts with Reade’s account which put her in the proximity of Biden because she worked for him.
While Biden has denied Reade’s allegation, the media’s lack of due diligence, coverage and probing of the incident in the #MeToo era may make you wonder: Is it a movement or a political tool best utilized against those you disagree with?
If the Blasey Ford accusations garnered high-profile coverage, a consequential allegation against someone who wants to be the next President of the United States should too.
If Hillary Clinton’s emails were front and center for weeks in 2016, Tara Reade’s allegations should be broadcasted by the mainstream media and heard by the entire country, not just those who seek it.
If they don’t want to cover Tara Reade, that’s their prerogative. But next time they call themselves the “Fourth Estate” and shout their mission to keep a watchful eye on the levers of power -- for the citizenry -- from their ivory towers, don’t just remember their silence on Tara Reade, remind them of it.
