In 2019, the federal government will spend around $2.86 Trillion on mandatory entitlement spending, nearly 65 percent of the federal budget. That's four times what is spent on defense, and nearly six times what is spent on interest. Retiring baby boomers are increasing expenditures from the Social Security and Medicare programs, and Medicaid for low-income health care. Unemployment is at a record low, so this is projected to be a smaller percentage than in recent years. Federal pensions and student loans are also included in the above total.
