Dems Stood Tall, Until Poll Numbers Said Otherwise

Isn’t it funny how Sen.Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) charged into a shutdown with guns blazing, only to withdraw after a weekend without government funding? It’s almost as if illegal immigration wasn’t the hill to die on, and the 2018 electorate wasn’t going to reward his cavalier bravery on behalf of the dependents of illegal immigrants. We aren’t sure about the internal polling, but we know that 58% of voters in the Harvard-Harris poll didn’t think so.

The question was asked: “Would you favor or oppose Democrats voting to shut the government down if the continuing budget resolution does not include restoring so-called DACA work permits for undocumented immigrants brought here illegally by their parents?” 42 percent were in favor, 58% were opposed. The poll clearly wasn’t stacked in favor of the President, who had a 44% approval in the same study.

With the exception of Sen. Tester (D-Mont.), the only Democrats to vote against cloture to allow government funding to proceed were from solidly Democrat states. The same Democrats that wouldn’t budge last week are in full retreat; Schumer didn’t pull back, he’s running to catch his caucus. This issue only plays with the Democrat base, and if Schumer had continued, would have created more problems for the Democrats in November.

Border security is President Trump’s signature issue. President Trump owes much of his early support to the outrage over Washington’s mismanagement of immigration, and Schumer thought he could use that issue against him. Schumer’s retreat means that the President’s voters are still with him, haven’t changed on this issue, and are still ready to throttle any Democrat that puts illegal immigrants before Americans.
