President Trump pledged to improve conditions for the American military on Saturday, saying the armed services have gone through a “very, very bad time.”
“It’s been a very, very bad period of time for our military,” Trump said at the commissioning of the USS Gerald Ford, which is the U.S.’s newest aircraft carrier.
After presenting himself as an antidote to the years under former President Obama, Trump went on to press Congress to pass a budget.
“That is why we reached a deal to secure an additional $20 billion for defense this year and it’s going up. And I asked Congress for another $54 billion for next year,” he continued.
