After Donald Trump gave a fiery speech about Venezuela’s collapsing socialist dictatorship, Venezuela tried to punch back—but their “insult” wound up being the best compliment Trump’s received in the eight months of his presidency.

Speaking to the United Nations, Trump ripped the starving nation’s failed government, saying:

“The problem in Venezuela is not that socialism has been poorly implemented, but that socialism has been faithfully implemented. From the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation and failure.”

Venezuela’s leaders were none too pleased with fighting words from the President of the United States. So the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza, stepped up to fire back at Trump.

His insult?

“For a moment, we didn’t know if we were listening to President Reagan in 1982 or to President Trump in 2017,” Arreaza complained.

Reagan, of course, would set the stage for the global collapse of communism in 1989, go down as one of the best Presidents of all time, and continues to be an omnipresent figure in the Republican Party more than 30 years later.

President Trump still hasn’t won over every voter in the Republican Party—but “insults” from socialist dictatorships, comparing him to the conservative leader who played a decisive role in bringing down the Soviet Union? That might go a long way.
