The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) cost taxpayers $70 Billion in 2016; the Department of Agriculture spent $3 Billion to administer the program, which bad 14% of the U.S. population enrolled that year; that’s 46.5 million people. The Trump budget is proposing to overhaul the program.
In 2017, the administration wanted to cut 25% from the program. Now the budget proposes to give SNAP recipients part of the original benefits, and a box of food regularly, including canned fruit, vegetables, meat, pasta, and cereal. This proposal would save $129.2 billion over the ten-year period between Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 and FY 2028. This estimate accounts for about $2.5 billion annually in additional administrative funds for states.
