Fun fact: China spent $6.8 Billion on foreign propaganda in 2016, according to the Central Intelligence Agency. That money is spent in multiple ways, but’s it’s the money they spend in the United States that should trouble you. The People’s Republic of China not only spends money to maintain the brainwashing of Chinese students at American universities, but also spends money to influence the thinking of Americans on campus.
Foreign Policy Magazine wrote a lengthy article about the influence the Chinese government has upon “Chinese Students and Scholars Associations” (CSSAs). The Chinese government exploits our freedom to maintain ideological conformity among Chinese students, lest they return to China with dangerous western notions that would undermine the regime. They do so because the Foreign Agents Registration Act, passed to curtail covert influence from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in the United States, exempts academic organizations.
China is also operating “Confucius Institutes” at American colleges, which serve to advance the Chinese worldview on their one state policy, which justifies the control of Taiwan, Macau, and Tibet, and other Beijing approved ideas. The CIA, and other intelligence agencies, have warned against them, and FBI Director testified before Congress last month to deliver the message to them directly. As President Trump continues to butt heads with China on the world stage, it will be interesting to see how the Chinese Communists respond with their assets at American colleges.
