The Senate on Wednesday historically voted to acquit President Trump of both impeachment charges levied against him by the Democrats in the House of Representatives.

On Article One President Trump was acquitted 52-48 and on Article Two he was acquitted 53-47. Two-Thirds of the Senate would need to vote to convict in order for Trump to be removed.

The only member of the GOP to join the Democrats in voting to convict President Trump was Mitt Romney. He voted to convict Trump of abuse of power. Romney did vote not guilty on the impeachment article of obstruction of Congress.

Romney became the first Senator from an impeached president’s party to ever vote for removal.

The acquittal of President Trump ends months and even years of impeachment dreams from the Democrats. It remains unclear if House Democrats will reopen impeachment proceedings against President Trump before the election.
