President Trump urged Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to primary challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in 2022.
Trump tweeted re AOC challenging Schumer: “Actually, that would be a big improvement – and she would win!”
This follows comments from Sen. Bernie Sanders Senior Advisor David Sirota who tweeted, “Just going to say something out loud that should be obvious: The fastest way to speed up the process of changing the corrupt, do-nothing, status-quo-protecting culture of the national Democratic Party is for [Alexandriaa Ocasio-Cortez] to defeat [Chuck Schumer] in a Democratic primary in 2022.”
Chuck Schumer has been on Capitol Hill for nearly 40 years. He became a Congressman in 1981 representing New York’s 16th district. He became a Senator in 1999 and became the Minority Leader in 2017.
Schumer hasn’t faced a difficult challenge since becoming a Senator. However, an AOC v. Schumer which pits the progressives vs the establishment in a fight for the heart of the party could be a hotly contested race.
