In 2017, the attorneys general for Maryland and Washington D.C. sued President Trump claiming that his D.C. hotel violated the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution which says no federal official may accept any gift or benefit from ant foreign government. Democrats claimed that Trump violated the clause by maintaining ownership of his companies which conduct business with foreign governments without seeking congressional approval. Ultimately, the case was dismissed.
