Backlash from Local Groups 

State school board associations and local school board groups were outraged by the letter. The letter resulted in many state school board associations withdrawing their memberships from the national group and many scathing letters were written by those groups condemning the organization. 

Many local groups felt betrayed by the letter, and a common theme here was that these groups felt that if they needed the government’s involvement they themselves could have asked for it.
